About dissent at the Young Vic
dissent is a new play by debbie tucker green, who also directs. It is a world premiere, and the Young Vic has said little about the story beyond its opening lines: state sponsored air conditioning and free cigarettes, work hard, go home, chill out, repeat, and all you have to do is comply and question nothing. The season announcement describes it as a play about how far people will go when they are told not to ask questions.
tucker green is one of the most distinctive writers working in British theatre. Her plays, among them random, generations, ear for eye and a profoundly affectionate, passionate devotion to someone (-noun), are short, exact and often unsettling, with lower-case titles and dialogue that moves fast. She has won Olivier and BAFTA awards for her work on stage and screen.
Who is dissent for?
Anyone who likes new writing with an edge, and anyone who has followed tucker green's earlier plays. It is also a chance to see Lashana Lynch on stage in a new role. It is not a show for a relaxed night out: the recommended age is 16 and over, and it runs without an interval.
What to expect
A short, tense evening in the Young Vic's main house, a flexible space of about 550 seats where the staging changes from show to show. Expect the play to start promptly and to run straight through.
