Accessible performances in London
Every accessible performance coming up at London theatres, in date order: captioned, BSL interpreted, audio described and relaxed. Filter by access type, theatre or date, and click a show to see its page.
Most access performances are normal performances of the show, so anyone can book a seat. Access-rate tickets, wheelchair spaces and seats kept for a clear view of the captions or interpreter are handled by each theatre's own access team, not by us. Some relaxed performances are different: the whole theatre is set aside for people with access needs.

Questions about accessible performances
What is a captioned performance?
The words spoken and sung on stage appear as text on screens, usually at the side of the stage, in time with the performers. The captions also say who is speaking and describe important sounds. They are open captions, so everyone in the theatre can see them; you don't need a device.
What is an audio described performance?
A describer talks you through what is happening on stage, through a headset, in the gaps between the dialogue and songs: the action, the set, the costumes, who has just walked on. Some theatres also run a touch tour before the show, where you can go on stage and handle the props and costumes. This is really helpful in getting a better understanding of the show. Headsets are free and collected at the theatre.
What is a relaxed performance?
Exactly as it sounds. The show is adjusted so it is easier for people who find a normal theatre trip difficult, such as autistic people, people with learning disabilities or sensory sensitivities, and families with young children. Loud sounds and bright or flashing lights are softened, the lights in the auditorium stay partly up, and you can move around, make noise, and leave and come back. There is usually a quiet space outside the auditorium, and many shows publish a visual guide beforehand, which can be extremely helpful in preparation for the big trip.
What is a BSL interpreted performance?
One or more interpreters translate the show into British Sign Language as it happens, usually standing to one side of the stage. Some seats are kept for a good view of the interpreter, and those are booked through the theatre's access team.
Can anyone go to a captioned, signed or audio described performance?
Yes. Tickets go on sale like any other date. The audio description is only heard through headsets, so nobody else hears it, and the captions and interpreter are to one side of the stage.
Can I book these performances through Hit The Theatre?
Yes, for ordinary seats: pick the date from the list and book as normal, with all-in pricing, so the price you pick is the price you pay. Access-rate tickets, wheelchair spaces and companion seats are booked through the theatre's own access team, not through us. This is mostly done by email, or online form, whilst sometimes being possible over the phone.
How do I get access-rate tickets?
Each theatre sets its own rules. Many London theatres ask you to register with the Access Card or their own access scheme before they release access rates, which often include a free or reduced ticket for a companion. The theatre's access team will tell you what they need.
Why isn't a show or date listed?
Not every show runs access performances, and some announce them only a few months ahead. The list updates as theatres add dates. Dates can change, so check with the theatre before you travel.
